At that time, I went to the Beijijia Children’s Welfare Institution with my company to do volunteer work for one day. In this small institution outside the fifth ring road of Beijing, there were about 10 children from Beijing and even nearby provinces and cities. The children range from a few months to a few years old, with the oldest being no more than 6 years old.

Virtually every one of these children suffers from a congenital condition to varying degrees. The most obvious is congenital cleft lip and palate, which occurs in children as young as a few months old. Some of the slightly older children suffer from withdrawn disorders, while others who appear to be active suffer from dwarfism, uremia, and a variety of other conditions. These children may not be aware of their physical defects, but they still get along very harmoniously with each other and show no particular resistance to visitors.

The environment of the orphanage is very simple and ordinary, the children usually do not have too many toys, the clothes they wear are basically donated by the community, and the entertainment programs are not very rich. But perhaps this childhood is the happiest time for them.
